How To Install Games On Sheepshaver For Mac

  1. The Mac version of SheepShaver is a universal binary, so it runs natively on an Intel-based Mac. (Versions that run on Windows and Linux also exist.) SheepShaver lets you run any older system between Mac OS 8.5 and Mac OS 9.0.4.
  2. You can use the default settings of sheepshaver and it will just work. So simply ‘apt-get install oss-compat’ in the terminal and then reboot the pi After that sheepshaver should work with default settings. Having said that though I am getting the same issue with speed when trying to run old games with audio.

I'm trying to install sheepshaver to run old mac games on my Macbook running Mac OS Sierra. I know I should download the Mac OS 9 image and name it 'Mac OS ROM” and drop it over sheepshaver wrapper. I named it properly, dropped it on the wrapper, and I still get that message. As far as I understand it, SheepShaver is a way to make classic (PowerPC) Mac games run on modern machines (both Linux and current Mac OS X) GOG offers a windows version of Diablo 1. This is the classic game with additions to make it work on windows 7/8/10.

SheepShaver is an open source PowerPC Macintosh emulator for use on both PowerPC and Intel Macs (and other systems, but that's outside the scope of this post). It enables the running of some types of classic Mac software which cannot be run any other way. It doesn't support games, and probably never will, but that doesn't mean it's of no use to Mac gamers. More on that below...

SheepShaver is not a commercial product and is in development, and as such requires some dedication by the end user to install and run. It requires a classic Mac OS install disc (not tied to a particular Mac model), and a Mac ROM image. It's beyond the scope of this post to go into detail - for more information on the requirements, installation, and running of SheepShaver, follow the links below:

Although SheepShaver isn't a gaming solution, it does have some relevance to those people who are still using the Mac TRLE (HowTomb Raider Level Editor). The TRLE includes a carbon Level Player that should run natively in Leopard on a PPC Mac, and in Rosetta on an Intel Mac. This is fine for those who are downloading already compiled, ready-to-play levels in TR4 format, but they might come unstuck with levels that are downloaded as WADs (the TOM file, along with other WADs), and which need to be compiled using the 'Tom2PC' converter included with the Mac TRLE - this converter is a classic Mac programme that can't be run in Leopard on any PPC Mac, or on any Intel Mac at all.
This is where SheepShaver may be useful for Mac TR players. If you have no other alternative but are eager to be able to convert and play a level posted as WADs, then SheepShaver might be able to run the 'Tom2PC' converter, thus giving you a compiled TR4 data file to run in the carbon Level Player!

As usual, please note that I don't have access to an Intel Mac, or a Leopard PPC Mac, so I'm not able to do any testing to verify any of the above. But in theory it should work, provided you're able to get a functional install of SheepShaver on your Mac.

Hey there. I am hoping to get the classic Descent games to run on the iMac. The Descent 3 game appears to work, a game dated back in 1999. But the original (iMac edition) doesn't work. I think it had something to do with the graphic card, intel or something. I'm still pretty new with the iMac stuff.
These two games were tested using the software 'PlayonMac'
Someone in the Descent forum typed out this:
Head to here to download DXX-Rebirth. Unpack the DMG which should install the program for you. The included docs nicely explain where everything goes, but it also describes difficulty getting the data. Your options there basically boil down to using an PowerPC emulator to run an older version of Mac OS to install it, or find a PC CD-ROM instead. DXX-Rebirth can work with either the PC or Mac data, regardless of the operating system you're on at the moment. You can get the data cheaply from GOG also, if you have a little extra money to spend
I guess the other solution would be to use a PowerPC emulator to run a older Mac OS version or a version of OSX with Classic support, but I'm not sure if the Mac versions of D1/D2 have the 150 FPS cap issue.

If the top paragraph doesn't work, what do you think of the bottom, and how I would go about getting this?
Would love to get back into Descent again. Thanks in advance.
